The family hopped on a train to Al Hofuf to discover this charming historic town and surrounding area over a three-day trip. We had a fabulous time and I compiled a list of experiences not to be missed.
Visit the Caves of Al Qara Mountain
The Al Qara Mountain caves and the neighbouring Land of Civilisations Museum is a fantastic place with a lot to offer - there are small cafes and restaurants around the caves and the friendly staff at the small museum offers up interesting facts and tidbits about the region. The whole site is well signposted, clean and impressively well maintained, so we easily found our way around.
The caves offer a perfect escape from the heat - a gorgeous natural wonder to walk around. The boys enjoyed discovering the nooks and crannies and being able to safely venture ahead on the paths. It's a stunning landscape and a wonderful experience.
If you get hungry after your visit, Nooba kushari is a great, budget-friendly option. It was our first time trying this popular, Egyptian street food that kept us full until dinner.
Wander Around the Old Town
It's easy to spend half an hour wondering around Ibrahim Palace in the afternoon sun and learning about its history. Then stroll around the surrounding streets soaking up the traditional architecture, before having a look around the small Qaisariah Souq after sundown. It's a great spot for admiring traditional Arabian architecture.
Try Contemporary Saudi Dishes in Dar Basma Restaurant
Dar Basma’s menu was so impressive that we couldn't get enough of it. We had dinner there one evening and loved it so much we went back the next day for lunch before returning to Riyadh. It's probably the best restaurant in town, showcasing modern Saudi cuisine at its best, in a beautiful building. It's fine dining, but family friendly and relaxed. Make sure to try the hummus mazzah and hasawi grape leaves. The boys were obsessed with the grilled chicken coated in date molasses - it's sweet and succulent and ever so slightly charred to give it an interesting, smoky twist.
Spend the Night at Al Koot Heritage Hotel
This beautiful, traditional hotel and restaurant sits conveniently opposite Ibrahim Palace, next door to a historic mosque and only a short walk away from Qaisariah Souq and Dar Basma. The staff is really friendly and the rooms are spacious and comfortable.
Its light-filled restaurants also serves the most delicious kabsa we had in Saudi so far. The breakfast is also incredible - fresh Turkish eggs and hot, spicy karak tea are my new favourite way to start the day. I want to return just to taste their authentic homemade dishes again.
Get Lost in King Abdullah Environmental Park
This new, large green space is perfect for a late afternoon stroll and play date - it boasts several small play areas and shaded spots that are begging to be used for a lovely picnic. The fountain in the middle of the park lights up after sundown, which can also be a fantastic entertainment opportunity for the kids.
